Daily Watch – BRT to assemble buses in Lagos, Nigeria to resume hibiscus export to Mexico

  • Contrary to the reports making rounds, President Buhari has not endorsed the ₦30,000 national minimum wage agreed between labour unions and the FG’s tripartite Committee. A source in the Presidency told Premium Times Wednesday that the President did not in any way endorse the amount, but he (Buhari) had only expressed his commitment to ensuring the implementation of a new National Minimum Wage, which is currently at ₦18,000.
  • Nigeria will resume the exportation of hibiscus to Mexico after that country lifted its suspension following the detection of storage pest in some consignments from Nigeria. Nigeria had exported 1,983 containers of the flower to Mexico alone and earned $35 million within nine months of 2017, according to Vincent Isegbe, the Coordinating Director, of the Nigeria Agricultural Quarantine Service.
  • Fola Tinubu, managing director of Primero Transport Services, the operator of the Bus Rapid Transit system in Lagos, has announced that the firm’s bus assembly plant set up in the Epe area of Lagos State will start operation in the second quarter of 2019. The firm had signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Yutong, one of the biggest bus manufacturers in the world.
  • The Nigerian Shipper Council and the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria are trying to streamline the procedures for import and export trade in the ports. The Executive Secretary of the Council, Hassan Bello, said that the NSC was trying to get the buy-in of MAN to reduce cargo dwell time at the ports. Speaking at the meeting, the President of MAN, Mansur Ahmed, said that Nigerian ports can never be competitive if they remained in their current state.
