On 18 January 2020, a long dormant Islamist group, Ansaru claimed responsibiility for an attack on the Emir of Potiskum in which 30 people were killed. Ansaru’s origin is unclear, but there are two dominant narratives: One says that Ansaru was founded by Abubakar Adam Kambar and Khalid Barnawi following a disagreement with other Boko Haram leaders in 2012. The other narrative says that Ansaru was founded by Mamman Nur, an ethnic Shuwa from Cameroon who was one of Mohammed Yusuf’s earliest disciples. This video tries to explain the origins of Ansaru.
