Chart of the week: Nigeria and maize

Nigeria is already self-sufficient in maize production as the data since independence shows. Imports only spike when there is a production shortfall. The Maize Association of Nigeria has predicted such a shortfall, up to 25%, in 2020 as part of the effects of insecurity and the COVID-19 pandemic. This implies that restricting maize imports at this time is not in the best interests of the consumer.
