Chart of the week: Open grazing bans

31st August 2021

As the 1 September deadline set by the Southern Nigeria Governors Forum for states in the South of the country to ban open grazing approaches, three states, Anambra, Edo and Imo have no ban in place. On Thursday, 26 August, ThisDay newspaper reported that the Imo governor, Hope Uzodinma had backed out of his pledge to enact a ban on open grazing in his state. So far, and including an unofficial ban by the Katsina Emirate Council, 11 states have banned open grazing, eight in the South and three in the North. Cross River has a law in place, but it has not been enacted, while the law in Ondo is awaiting the governor’s assent. The anti-open-grazing laws in Akwa Ibom, Delta and Enugu states are at the second reading state.
